Confident Dealer Amid Cars and Motorcycles
A small-scale automotive entrepreneur navigating the digital landscape.

JurnalPost.com - Running a car and motorcycle dealership for two years is certainly not enough to call myself a major player in the automotive industry. My business is still modest and home-based. I do not yet have a large showroom, the number of vehicles available is limited, and I handle most of the business processes myself.

However, it is precisely from this position as a small business owner that I have observed a major shift in how people search for and purchase vehicles.

A few years ago, someone wanting to buy a used car or motorcycle might have visited a showroom directly, asked friends, looked at advertisements, or traveled from place to place to find a suitable vehicle.

Now, the vehicle search process often begins simply on a smartphone screen.

Prospective buyers view vehicle photos on Instagram, watch videos on TikTok or YouTube, search for specifications via Google, compare prices across various platforms, read user comments, and then contact the seller via WhatsApp.

This change has made me realize that a showroom today does not always have to be a physical building.

Social media has become a new form of showroom.

For a small business like mine, this change opens up great opportunities. Without needing a large business space, vehicles can still be introduced to potential buyers from various regions through photos, videos, digital catalogs, and direct communication via messaging apps.

Information regarding specifications, vehicle condition, price, document completeness, and even the negotiation process can all be handled digitally.

However, this convenience also brings other consequences. Competition has become increasingly open.

Consumers can now compare many vehicles in a short amount of time. They consider not only the price but also the vehicle year, engine and body condition, usage history, document completeness, seller reputation, and the quality of service provided.

Therefore, in my opinion, vehicle dealers can no longer rely solely on being good at selling cars or motorcycles.

What is far more important is the ability to sell trust.

AI Entering Small Business

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is another part of the change that business owners are beginning to feel.

For me, AI is not a technology to be feared. On the contrary, for small businesses, this technology can be a tool to help make work faster and more efficient.

Tasks that previously required a lot of time, such as finding content ideas, writing promotional materials, creating social media captions, studying market trends, developing marketing strategies, and analyzing consumer information, can now be assisted by AI technology.

This certainly provides an advantage for business owners with limited resources.

Small businesses usually do not have separate teams for marketing, data analysis, photography, administration, and content creation. In many cases, the business owner must perform all these roles simultaneously.

This is where AI can function as a helpful tool.

However, there is one thing that I believe can never be fully replaced by AI, namely human honesty and responsibility in running a business.

AI can help make promotional writing more attractive. AI can also help read data, find market patterns, and provide insights into consumer behavior.

But AI cannot replace a merchant's responsibility when telling a buyer that a vehicle is truly in a certain condition.

Ultimately, humans remain the party responsible for the information provided to consumers.

Technology Should Make Business More Transparent

I see another challenge in the use of technology in the vehicle trading world.

Technology should not be used to make a vehicle look much better than its actual condition.

Instead, technology should help sellers convey information more clearly and transparently.

Vehicle photos, for example, should accurately depict the unit's condition. If there are flaws, prospective buyers should know about them from the start.

The same applies to vehicle specifications, document status, repair history, or specific parts that have been damaged.

For me, such openness is essential in building long-term relationships with customers.

Perhaps a vehicle will be harder to sell when its flaws are explained openly. However, customer trust is far more valuable than the profit from a single transaction.

In the vehicle trading business, reputation is often built on customer experience. When someone feels they have received honest information and good service, the likelihood of them recommending the seller to others is much higher.

Therefore, digitalization should not be understood only as a way to get more potential buyers.

Digitalization must also be a way to build a more transparent business.

Home-Based Businesses Must Still Read Data

Over the two years I have run this business, I have come to understand that the automotive business today requires a combination of field experience, service, digital marketing, data utilization, and the ability to adapt to technology.

You do not have to be a large company to start utilizing technology.

Even home-based businesses can start with simple steps.

For example, managing social media consistently, creating digital vehicle catalogs, using WhatsApp Business in a more structured way, storing customer data, recording the types of vehicles most frequently asked about, monitoring market price trends, and studying the characteristics of high-demand vehicles.

Such simple data is actually very valuable.

From the records of prospective buyer inquiries alone, for instance, a merchant can determine which types of vehicles are in high demand.

If many customers ask for family cars at a certain price point over several weeks, that information can be a consideration when deciding which vehicles to purchase for future stock.

In the future, AI can help make this process even faster.

Technology can help analyze search trends, compare vehicle prices, read demand patterns, and provide references for business decision-making.

The Biggest Challenge Is Not the Cost of Technology

In my opinion, the biggest challenge for small businesses in the AI era is not whether the business owner can afford expensive technology.

The main challenge is whether we are willing to learn and change.

Technological development moves very quickly.

Today we might only use AI to help create promotional content. In a few years, the same technology might be used increasingly to read market trends, help determine vehicle prices, estimate consumer demand, and provide stock recommendations.

Therefore, I do not see the future of business as a competition between humans and AI.

I see it as a competition between business owners who are able to utilize technology and those who are reluctant to adapt.

Technology does not automatically make a business better. The final result still depends on how that technology is used.

Small Businesses Must Not Think Small

The business I run is indeed still home-based. The journey has only been about two years and is still far from perfect.

However, that experience makes me believe that limitations in space, number of vehicles, or capital should not stop a business from growing.

The digital era provides opportunities that might have been difficult for small business owners to obtain previously.

With social media, a home-based business can be known by people who have never even passed by the business location.

With data, business owners can make more measurable decisions.

With AI, various administrative and marketing tasks can be performed more efficiently.

But behind all these technological developments, the basic principle in business remains the same: trust.

Technology can change. Social media platforms can change. The way consumers search for vehicles can also continue to evolve.

However, honesty in providing information, responsibility for the goods sold, and service to customers remain the main foundation.

Ultimately, AI may help us sell vehicles faster.

But honesty is what makes customers trust, recommend, and one day return to buy from us.

For me, that is the principle that needs to be maintained by automotive business owners as the business world moves faster into the era of digital and artificial intelligence.
