MALANG, JurnalPost.com — Group 11 of the Thematic Community Service Program (KKN) from Universitas Merdeka Malang has installed convex mirrors and convex mirrors and reflectors at several road points in Dusun Wangkal, Dalisodo Village, Malang Regency, East Java.
The installation of these road safety facilities is part of the SIGAP (Siaga Blind Spot / Blind Spot Alert) program, which was carried out during the KKN period from July 31 to August 31, 2026.
The program, supervised by Yosanda Zata Aman, SST., MM., was designed as an effort to help improve public safety, particularly for road users navigating sharp bends with limited visibility.

Before proceeding with the installation, the students first conducted a survey and observed road conditions in Dusun Wangkal. The team also gathered information through interviews with the Head of Dusun Wangkal, Suripno, and several local residents.
The observation results revealed that several road sections have sharp bends, making it difficult for motorists to see vehicles approaching from the opposite direction.
This condition is considered to increase the risk of sudden braking and collisions if vehicles travel through without reducing speed.
Based on statements from the Hamlet Head and residents, there have been approximately 47 traffic accidents in the area over the past year.

However, this figure is information obtained by students through interviews with the community and is not official statistical data from the police or relevant agencies.
Nevertheless, the road conditions and information from the community served as the basis for the students to implement a preventive program through the installation of additional safety equipment.
Six Convex Mirrors Installed at Bends
In implementing the SIGAP program, Group 11 installed six units of convex mirrors at six bend points deemed in need of additional field of view.
The convex mirrors were installed at a height of approximately three meters from the road surface. The installation position was adjusted to the direction of oncoming vehicles so that the road reflection can be seen by motorists.
Meanwhile, the support poles were buried about half a meter into the ground to help maintain the stability of the construction.
The presence of convex mirrors allows motorists to obtain a wider angle of view when approaching bends or intersections that are obstructed.
Thus, road users can be aware of the presence of vehicles from the opposite direction before entering points with limited visibility.

These facilities are expected to help motorists increase their vigilance while adjusting their speed when passing through bends in Dusun Wangkal.
Reflectors Assist Motorists at Night
In addition to convex mirrors, the students also installed 15 reflector units at three road points.
At each point, five reflectors were installed using a pipe construction approximately one meter long.
The reflective material installed on these facilities functions to reflect vehicle headlights so that the edges or position of the road can be more easily recognized, especially at night or when environmental lighting is minimal.
Reflectors serve as additional visual markers for vehicle users to recognize parts of the road that require higher attention and vigilance.
The combination of convex mirrors and reflectors is expected to strengthen the visual information received by motorists.
The mirrors help road users see conditions behind the bend, while the reflectors provide markers when environmental conditions become dark.
Motorist Vigilance Still Required
Although equipped with additional facilities, the presence of convex mirrors and reflectors does not replace the obligation of motorists to remain cautious.
Road users still need to reduce speed when entering bends, pay attention to vehicles from the opposite direction, and ensure road conditions are safe before passing.
The facilities installed by the students only function as tools to improve the visibility and vigilance of road users.
The sustainability of the program also requires community support. Convex mirrors need to be cleaned periodically and checked to ensure their reflection angle remains accurate.
Meanwhile, reflectors must be ensured to remain sturdy and their light-reflecting material must not be covered by dirt or damaged.
Maintenance of these facilities can be carried out through cooperation between residents and the Dusun Wangkal administration.
The local community welcomed the installation of these safety measures. Residents hope that the presence of convex mirrors and reflectors will help road users identify points that require extra vigilance.
They also hope that similar facilities can be added to other road sections that have similar characteristics of bends and limited visibility.
Through the SIGAP program, the Thematic KKN students of Universitas Merdeka Malang hope to provide benefits that can be felt directly by the community.
In addition to being part of the community service implementation, the installation of these facilities is expected to help create a safer road environment for residents and visitors passing through the Dusun Wangkal area, Dalisodo Village.
