Bekasi, JurnalPost.com — Public speaking is a vital skill to develop from the elementary school level. To support this, a Community Service Team from Universitas Bhayangkara Jakarta Raya held a workshop titled “Basic Public Speaking Training in Indonesian and English” at SDN Srijaya 04, Bekasi.

This activity aimed to help students improve their oral communication skills, build self-confidence, and practice the courage to express ideas in both Indonesian and English.

The training was conducted by a team of lecturers from Universitas Bhayangkara Jakarta Raya, led by Ferawaty Puspitorini, S.S., M.Pd., alongside two members, Dr. Muhammad Zulfadhli, S.Pd., M.Pd., and Haris Hamdani, S.Pd.I., M.Pd.

Through this community service initiative, the academics sought to provide a learning experience that focuses not only on theory but also gives students the opportunity to practice speaking skills directly.

Students Introduced to Basic Public Speaking Techniques

During the training, students were introduced to various basic public speaking techniques, ranging from delivering messages clearly and managing vocal intonation to using facial expressions and body language during communication.

Participants were also encouraged to understand the importance of having the courage to perform and speak in front of others. These skills are considered essential for helping students become more active in the learning process, especially when expressing opinions, answering questions, or giving presentations in class.

In addition to using Indonesian, the training introduced simple communication practices in English. Through this approach, students are expected to become more accustomed to using a foreign language in daily communication situations.

The activity was designed to be interactive, combining material delivery, demonstrations, speaking exercises, and simple communication practice.

This approach provided space for students to recognize public speaking as a skill that can be learned and continuously developed through practice.

The head of the Community Service Team, Ferawaty Puspitorini, explained that public speaking skills need to be introduced early because they are closely related to building a child's self-confidence and communication abilities.

“Through this training, we want to help students build the courage to speak, convey ideas, and express opinions clearly and politely. We also introduced simple English speaking practices so that students have a positive experience using the language. We hope this activity serves as a first step in fostering the self-confidence and communication skills that will benefit their future,” said Ferawaty.

According to the community service team, good communication skills can support students in various activities, both in the school environment and in social life.

These skills are also relevant to modern educational needs, which encourage students to be able to communicate, collaborate, think critically, and convey ideas creatively.

Principal Appreciates Public Speaking Training

The implementation of this activity received a positive response from the Principal of SDN Srijaya 04, Dra. Catur Endang Lestari, M.Pd.

She noted that the public speaking training provided an opportunity for students to develop courage while improving their communication skills in two languages.

“We welcome this public speaking training because it gives students the chance to learn to communicate more confidently, both in Indonesian and English. Activities like this are very beneficial for supporting learning at school, especially in training students' courage to speak, express opinions, and perform in front of their peers. We hope that collaborations with universities like this can continue to be developed,” said Catur Endang Lestari.

According to her, educational activities involving universities can be a form of support for the learning process at school, particularly in developing students' non-academic skills.

Through this training, students not only gained knowledge about speaking techniques but were also encouraged to be more confident when communicating with teachers, peers, and others.

A Manifestation of Higher Education Community Service

The public speaking training at SDN Srijaya 04 is part of the implementation of the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education), specifically in the field of community service.

Through this program, Universitas Bhayangkara Jakarta Raya strives to provide academic contributions that can be felt directly by the community, including in the elementary education environment.

Collaboration between universities and schools also opens opportunities to introduce more varied learning approaches while supporting the development of student competencies beyond the main curriculum.

The community service team hopes that this training can be a first step in building a habit of active and confident communication among the students of SDN Srijaya 04.

Moving forward, the skills introduced through this activity are expected to be continuously practiced and applied in daily learning activities, so that students become increasingly accustomed to expressing opinions, presenting ideas, and performing in public.

With continuous practice, public speaking skills in both Indonesian and English are expected to become an asset for students to develop their potential, both while pursuing their education and when interacting in society.
